Silver Sky Farms, LLC is a sustainably focused farming operation located near Dumas, Texas. Owner-operators Chandler Preston and Ethan Cox are brothers, who together have built an incredibly progressive operation.

Born and raised in Moore County, Chandler and Ethan are the current representatives of a multi-generational farming family. Chandler started farming his first quarter- section in 2009. Shortly after, younger brother Ethan joined the operation, and in 2019, the brothers decided to create Silver Sky Farms, LLC.

The idea behind the name came from one of their favorite sights: a thunderstorm on the horizon painting the skies silver as it rolls in. The fact that these young men see “silver” instead of grey speaks to their optimistic nature. They live their lives the same way they run their operation — optimistically and full of faith.

Today, the brothers farm over 10,000 acres. They pride themselves on using techniques and practices that are time-tested and effective, while also integrating cutting-edge technology that allows them to focus on conservation and efficiency. Constant in their efforts to become better stewards of the land, Chandler says they are always looking for ways to “do more with less.”

This past year, Silver Sky Farms invested in a precision spray system that uses sensors to detect weeds and “spot spray.” Whereas the traditional application approach is a “constant spray,” the targeted approach uses substantially less chemical. Decreasing the chemical input results in cost savings and reduces the environmental impact — win-win. Using less chemical also means the young men spend significantly less time loading the spray rig, allowing them to cover more acres in less time.

Because the brothers operate in the Texas Panhandle, wind is always a consideration. The precision spray system allows them to capitalize on the days that the wind isn’t blowing. This is a huge advantage to their operation. The initial investment in the system was $160,000, and Chandler reports that on the first application, they saved $35,000. In some instances, the system is yielding savings of up to 90% on chemical costs. According to the brothers, their precision system will more than pay for itself in two years.

Another incredibly important reason they focus on efficiency is to make the best use of their most valuable commodity: time. Time is precious, and no one understands this better than Chandler, his wife Natasha, their children Emma and Greyson, and their extended family. The Preston’s oldest child Emma is eight years old and has literally spent half her life battling brain cancer.

In August of 2019, during Emma’s most difficult treatment cycle, a scan revealed that more tumors were growing despite extremely aggressive treatment. Chandler and Natasha received the worst news any parent could imagine — they were told they likely had two to three months left with Emma. The couple chose to stop all treatment and took their daughter home. The doctors encouraged them to obtain hospice care. Again, relying on faith and optimism, the Prestons chose not to make the phone call to hospice right away. Slowly they began to witness improvement in Emma’s condition.

Emma continued to defy the odds, and in June of 2020, a scan showed that she was completely and miraculously tumor-free. Today, Emma is a two-time survivor of brain cancer and she continues to overcome issues caused by the side effects of her treatment.

After all this family has been through, they understand that every day is a gift. Spending time together is incredibly important to them. They try to make the most of every moment, truly living and enjoying each other’s company. Finding the best balance between spending time working in the field and spending quality time as a family is of utmost importance.

These younger farmers are inspirational in their commitment to their trade. Their optimism and faith are contagious.

Their AgTexas loan officer, Conner Allen, says it best: “They are impressive. Chandler and Ethan are incredible farmers, and even better people. It’s an honor to serve them.
